Description

The history of World War One aviation is a rich and varied story. The Great War consumed the world in a conflict that was unrivaled until that time. It was a kind of war far different than was waged on the ground. The fight for control of the air was where the cunning, and bravery of the individual could matter. This website is one person’s tribute to the aircraft and to the pilots on both sides that flew them.

Description

This short film is an interview with an Indian woman as she drives through Delhi on her way to a kitty party. She explains that a kitty party is a monthly social gathering of a group of women, to "eat, drink and be merry", but that it is primarily concerned with money. Each member of the group contributes a sum to the "kitty", and at each gathering, lots are drawn to determine who will receive the lump sum of the kitty that month, to spend on whatever they wish. The kitty therefore represents both an opportunity for socialising and for saving money. The interviewee stresses how she considers the party members to be acquaintances rather than friends, but also the benefits to be gained from saving money in this manner. Description

This learning object suggests an approach to understanding poetry and to give a framework to help write about it. Aimed at learners, it uses two poems by Wilfred Owen as examples: 'Exposure' and 'Dulce et Decorum Est', and offers advice on writing an essay on a single poem or an essay comparing two poems. The object introduces 'SMILERS', an approach to carrying out an analysis of a poem. SMILERS stands for Subject, Movement, Imagery, Language, Emotion, Response and Sounds. The resource suggests using SMILERS to consider the following essay question: Discuss how Wilfred Owen writes about suffering in ‘Exposure’.
