Interactive timeline on Anglo-Dutch relations (50 BC to 1830)

Description

This interactive multimedial timeline on Anglo-Dutch relations from antiquity to 1830, uses MIT’s Simile technology and is based on the manuscript 'The Stranger’s case : a timeline of Cross-Channel Interactions' by Jaap Harskamp, curator of the Dutch and Flemish collections at the British Library, in which he has compiled and annotated a comprehensive list of over 800 events relating to Anglo-Dutch relations throughout the centuries. It is part of the Open Learning Environment in early modern Low Countries history (www.ucl.ac.uk/dutch/OER).

Podcasting the Ancient World

Description

The website hosts a range of podcasts to enhance the learning experience of students. Two areas were chosen: Classical Archaeology and Egyptology. The materials were designed to support teaching in two areas. The first year (level 1) introductory module to Greek Archaeology and the second, the second and third years (combined) module (levels 2and 3) on Images of Power in the Greek and Roman Worlds. The project will help to develop students' personal reflection on material culture and archaeological sites. This site is still under development.

Critical thinking through book reviews

Description

A study skills learning object intended for self-study. The objectives are: a) to familiarise students with basic principles of critical thinking and apply this to their personal learning styles; and b) to provide models of critical book reviews. The second objective relates particularly to the writing of critical book reviews for assessment. Divergent experiences of India and Pakistan after 1947

Description

In this video Partha Chatterjee (Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University) discusses how India and Pakistan have differed in their development since 1947. Looks at the difficulties of creating a strong central government in Pakistan and the military coup of 1956. Also compares the development of governmental institutions in the two countries with India's institutions developing more effectively than Pakistan's due to its democratic regime.

First World War

Description

This learning object is intended for use in teaching the poetry of Wilfred Owen. It provides background about the First World War, about which Owen wrote a number of poems. There is a short essay by Karl W. Murray providing an overview of the war. A section on propaganda includes images of several propaganda posters, accompanied by some tasks to set for students.
