See all metadataGuest Lecture: John Chillag - Learning from the Holocaust
Description
As part of the Senator George Mitchell Seminar Series, John Chillag delivered a powerful and moving speech to mark the 64th anniversary of the Nazi occupation of Hungary. The audience first heard the impressions of two students from Abbey Grange School, who visited Auschwitz-Birkenau in late February. Rebakah commented, "Although a traumatic experience, I'm glad I had the chance to visit Auschwitz - to learn what atrocities had happened and make me realise that situations like the Holocaust should never happen again". John's seminar analysed those involved in the Holocaust and genocides, with talk of perpetrators, interveners, rescuers and bystanders. John described how silent bystanders' 'inaction' allowed mass murder to flourish and went on to add that everybody has a choice and rSubjects

Unit 5 of the Countries and Citizens: Linking International Macro and Micro Data e-learning materials. This unit demonstrates the application of multilevel modelling techniques using international macro and micro data. It will cover when and how individual and aggregate level data can be combined within a multilevel model, including simultaneous modelling of individual and country level variables. Using a worked example it will cover advantages and disadvantages of a multilevel approach together with a basic introduction to the statistical method. By the end of this students will be able to: 1.Demonstrate the application of multilevel modelling techniques using macro and micro data. 2.Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a multilevel approach 3.Evaluate and experience a multilevel mSubjects

Description
Unit 2 of the Countries and Citizens Linking International Macro and Micro Data e-learning materials. Using a series of examples, this unit illustrates the forms of cross-national comparisons that can be undertaken using international macro data. Common methodological problems such as differences in data quality and measurement issues are addressed. It also highlights which databases are designed for cross country comparative research and also covers existing standards and harmonisation strategies. It identifies some of the problems that might be encountered when using aggregate data in cross national research. By the end of this students will be able to: 1.Use international macro data to undertake cross-national comparisons 2.Recognise some of the common methodological problems involved iSubjects

Unit 4 in the Countries and Citizens: Linking International Macro and Micro Data e-learning materials. This unit demonstrates the potential for combining macro and micro data for a specific research question, such as a comparative study of attitudes to voting combined with country or city level turnout data in a cross country analysis. For example ESS consists of samples of individuals in 22 European Countries. The survey asks about media usage; political interests; party attachments; voting behaviour; knowledge of the outcomes of European elections and participants views on such issues as immigration, policy efficacy, the economy and the environment. These data can be combined with the aggregate voting pattern data available in Eurostat New Cronos, such as the prSubjects

This short film is an interview with an Indian woman as she drives through Delhi on her way to a kitty party. She explains that a kitty party is a monthly social gathering of a group of women, to "eat, drink and be merry", but that it is primarily concerned with money. Each member of the group contributes a sum to the "kitty", and at each gathering, lots are drawn to determine who will receive the lump sum of the kitty that month, to spend on whatever they wish. The kitty therefore represents both an opportunity for socialising and for saving money. The interviewee stresses how she considers the party members to be acquaintances rather than friends, but also the benefits to be gained from saving money in this manner. A sense of the heavy traffic in Delhi is made clear throughout the fiSubjects
