A new North East Regional Airport Committee was formed in April 1963, paving the way for the major developments seen in this photograph. Construction of the new terminal was completed in 1966 and officially opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on February 17 1967. The 1960s saw a boom in demand for foreign sunshine holidays, especially to Spain. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of colour aerial photographs of Newcastle upon Tyne. These images were captured by the Newcastle-based photographic firm Turners Ltd during the mid to late 1970s. At first glance, some of these images give the impression that the Newcastle landscape hasn't changed much in 40 years. Description
Aerial view of the Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, April 1962 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28699A). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. See all metadataAerial view of 'Nicola' under construction
Description
Aerial photograph of the Southwick Yard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd, showing vessels under construction, including the ?Nicola?, 11 October 1967 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/51618E). This set celebrates the ?Nicola?, the first in a long line of standard ships designed by the Sunderland shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd. The images document her construction from October 1967 through to her completion in February 1968. The shipbuilders commissioned the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots of the ?Nicola? and these images have given us a unique view of her development. She was the first SD14 to be completed (the name stands for ?Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight?) and was designed as a replacement for the surviving ?Liberty ships?, built by American yards during the Second World War. Those Liberty ships had played a vital role in the Allied victory but by the 1960s they were fast approaching the end of their working lives. The SD14 developed by Austin & Pickersgill met the demand for economic and reliable cargo ships. The simplicity of the design meant that it could be marketed by the shipbuilders at a very competitive price. It?s success is reflected by the fact that over the course of 20 years 211 ships were built to the SD14 design by Austin Pickersgill and its licensees. Sunderland can be very proud of its remarkable shipbuilding and engineering history and the SD14 is one the City?s finest achievements. Description
This is an Aerial view of South Shields foreshore, July 1955. Reference: DT.TUR/2/14025F This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. Description
This is an Aerial view of South Shields foreshore, July 1955. Reference: DT.TUR/2/14025D This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. Taken on a cloudy day, this image clearly shows the Elizabethan town walls and bastions. The Royal Border Railway Bridge can be seen on the right and the docks at Tweedmouth on the left. At first glance, little has changed since this photograph was taken. However, on closer inspection cars can still be seen, traffic queuing on the medieval Framwellgate Bridge and there is no sign of the massive Leazes Bowl roundabout that now dominants eastern approaches to the city centre.
