View of Usworth Brickworks, May 1965 (TWAM ref. 5417/406/1). 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved. Postcard, black and white, of two young children. One child is sitting in a wooden high chair dressed in a dress with lacy collar. Young girl standing with hand on tray of high chair, dressed in bonnet, shawl, and striped dress. Regional Faces of the First World War. The photograph is from an album relating to the men, women and children from Tyne and Wear who lived, worked or fought during the First World War. Accompanying this photo is the biographical and supporting information that we have about them, but the full story is not always known. Our collections records are not very detailed in some cases. We need your help to fill in the blanks. Do you have any information to add to what is already here? A name? A location? What more can you find out and tell us about their life? View of the 'Needles' afloat on the River Wear after launch at the shipyard of William Pickersgill & Sons Ltd 5 February 1958 (TWAM ref. DS.WP/4/PH/1/355/1). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. TWAM Ref: TWCMS:M4441 A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for. Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005. This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Ltd in Hebburn on 28 March 1920. If you have some extra information about this photograph, please add your comments, information and any links, images or text. Description
A view along Eighth Row, Brickgarth, Easington Lane, mid 20th Century (TWAM ref. 220). These images are part of a small series of photographs produced and accumulated by Hetton Urban District Council. The Council was established in 1895 under the Local Government Act 1894. The district included Hetton-le-Hole, Hetton Downs, Easington Lane, East Rainton and Moorsley. It was abolished in 1974 when the area became part of Sunderland Metropolitan Borough (later City) Council.
