Description
The laws of classical mechanics and thermodynamics are used to explore how the properties of fluids on a rotating Earth manifest themselves in, and help shape, the global patterns of atmospheric winds, ocean currents, and the climate of the Earth. Theoretical discussion focuses on the physical processes involved. Underlying mechanisms are illustrated through laboratory demonstrations, using a rotating table, and through analysis of atmospheric and oceanic data. This is an advanced interdisciplinary introduction to applied parallel computing on modern supercomputers. It has a hands-on emphasis on understanding the realities and myths of what is possible on the world's fastest machines. We will make prominent use of the Julia Language, a free, open-source, high-performance dynamic programming language for technical computing. Description
This photograph is from the Robert Hope collection. Robert Hope was a resident of Newcastle upon Tyne. In the early 1970s he took out a bank loan to buy a Rolleiflex camera. Over the next few years he photographed various Newcastle scenes, including the Grainger Market and the demolition of housing estates in the West End of the city. Robert Hope died in 2001. Thanks to Steven Hope for donating the collection to Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
