Description

For the last century, precepts of scientific management and administrative rationality have concentrated power in the hands of technical specialists, which in recent decades has contributed to widespread disenfranchisement and discontent among stakeholders in natural resources cases. In this seminar we examine the limitations of scientific management as a model both for governance and for gathering and using information, and describe alternative methods for informing and organizing decision-making processes. We feature cases involving large carnivores in the West (mountain lions and grizzly bears), Northeast coastal fisheries, and adaptive management of the Colorado River. There will be nightly readings and a short written assignment. Description

This course examines joint fact-finding within the context of adaptive and ecosystem-based management. Challenges and obstacles to collaborative approaches for deciding environmental and natural resource policy and the institutional changes within federal agencies necessary to utilize joint fact-finding as a means to link science and societal decisions are discussed and reviewed with scientists and managers. Senior-level federal policymakers also participate in these discussions. This course examines joint fact-finding within the context of adaptive and ecosystem-based management. Personal Injury Negotiation Transaction

Description

The transaction is equivalent to at least a full module in Delict or Tort. The sim was played with postgraduate students on the Diploma in Legal Practice in Scotland (soon to become Professional Education and Training 1 (PEAT 1)), and has been designed to run for around 12 weeks. It has been adapted to a first-year undergraduate Tort module at Glamorgan.

Activities and Approaches that Promote Collaborative Learning

Description

In this lesson, we will be reviewing and discussing many activities and approaches that promote collaborative learning. Firstly, we will discuss the importance of embedding and supporting Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) in the learning experience. Secondly, we will discuss some government strategies for developing LLN skills in specialist areas and also raise awareness of government strategies to support improving LLN. Thirdly, we will identify strategies for managing and designing collaborative group work and also explore embedding LLN into vocational subject areas. Finally, we will consider the knowledge and skills you need to embed LLN into your teaching.

Assignments to support the learning process

Description

In this unit, we will look at the kind of assignments that challenge learners to go beyond mere regurgitation of facts. We will look at ways of constructing assignments so that the assignments themselves provide the scaffolding through the course. We will explore options for encouraging collaborative learning while still ensuring that each individual pulls his or her own weight. We will also look at the use of e-portfolios as a teaching and assessment tool.

Music matters wiki at RSAMD

Description

Students at RSAMD who have chosen to study Community Music have to be skilled in documenting their practice, with the ability to analyse the processes they have used to createoriginal work, and to make this learning explicit. The Music Matters wiki has been developed to encourage staff, students and community partners to collaborate in the design of materials for performance and the documentation of work, using a range of media. As a result, they can now share their learning more widely with other colleagues within the RSAMD Community Music Community of Practice who have recognised the value of the wiki resources as reference material which can be used for continuing professional development training.
