Using MATLAB for engineers

Description

Introductory course on learning and using MATLAB aimed at 1st year engineering undergraduate. These were developed at the University of Sheffield and authored by J A Rossiter from The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. The files include a slightly animated power point slide (runs via web) which includes audio. Hence a little like a lecture. The source m-files mentioned are also supplied in the zip files mentioned. These m-files cover a group of topics. Read the instruction file to learn how to make 'lectures' available to students. More information for control with MATLAB is stored under the control contribution by same author and on the website http://controleducation.group.shef.ac.uk/acs211/notes_webct_quizzes_acs211.htm

TALAT Lecture 2104.02: Case Study on Windows

Description

This lecture gives teachers and students grounding in the development of satisfactory and suitable window design in aluminium; it helps them acquire an understanding of the principles underlying good design. Students need to be able to design aluminium windows which conform to local planning regulations and which are suitable for national traditions in each market they are offered in. This involves the acquisition of local climatic data since the products need to withstand the climatic conditions pertaining in the different marketing zones. Products need to be of a design acceptable to architects and must also fulfil the requirements of the market. Basic design engineering background, basic knowledge of corrosion effects, and some familiarity with TALAT lecture series 2100, 2200 and 5104 i

60" Mirror for William Parsons, Earl of Rosse

Description

Reference: DS.GP.1919/3630 This photograph shows the 60" Mirror built for William Parsons, Earl of Rosse for his Telescope, said to be the largest telescope of the 19th century, The Earl of Rosse was famous for his astronomical studies in the 1800's. This photograph is taken from the Grubb Parsons Ltd collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records of Grubb Parsons Ltd, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, consist of 65 linear metres (213 linear feet) of files, plans, photographs and glass plate negatives relating to this internationally renowned firm's manufacture of precision telescopic instruments. The original Business was founded in the early nineteenth century by Thomas Grubb, in 1925 the company was acquired by Sir Charles Parsons and continued to manufacture Telescopic and Astronomical instruments until 1985. This Glass Lantern Slide is taken from a large collection that documents the work of Grubb Parsons Ltd at their workshop in Walkergate, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was here that Grubb Parsons Ltd manufactured Telescopic and Astronomical equipment for companies and observatories world wide. Their equipment was designed and built for use and research across the Globe, to name only a few of these locations Grubb Parsons Ltd supplied to the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Egypt, South Africa, Greece, Australia, Japan, India, Hawaii, Poland, Chile, Canada, France and Spain.
