Christmas on Ward 26, 1916

Description

This photograph shows a view of patients and staff of Ward 26, 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. The photograph was taken at some time in December 1916 and documents the Christmas Celebrations for the patients. Reference: DF.BGS-4-6-2 This set offers a rare and intimate glimpse in to the Life of a Wounded Soldier recovering from the horrors of World War One. This particular set of photographs is taken from a collection held at Tyne & Wear Archives capturing the every day lives of the nurses and patients at the 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield and Longshaw Lodge Convalescent Home for Wounded Soldiers, Grindleford, near Sheffield. HMS Ark Royal - Leaving the Tyne for the first time on trials 19th October 1984

Description

HMS Ark Royal was the former flagship of the Royal Navy. One of three Invincible class aircraft carriers she was affectionately known as The Mighty Ark. Her keel was laid by Swan Hunter at Wallsend on 7th December 1978 and she was launched on 20th June 1981 and completed in 1985. Major deployments included the Bosnian war (1993) and the invasion of Iraq (2003). More recently, she assisted in the repatriation of air travellers stranded by the 2010 volcanic eruption. Most photographs and images in this set are taken from the Swan Hunter Collection held by Tyne and Wear Archives Service.
