2.500 Desalination and Water Purification (MIT) 2.500 Desalination and Water Purification (MIT)

Description

Water supply is a problem of worldwide concern: more than 1 billion people do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. Water is a particular problem for the developing world, but scarcity also impacts industrial societies. Water purification and desalination technology can be used to convert brackish ground water or seawater into drinking water. The challenge is to do so sustainably, with minimum cost and energy consumption, and with appropriately accessible technologies. This subject will survey the state-of-the-art in water purification by desalination and filtration. Fundamental thermodynamic and transport processes which govern the creation of fresh water from seawater and brackish ground water will be developed. Control systems analysis for engineers

Description

This site contains links to resources for an introduction to control analysis for second year engineering undergraduate. The main focus is on block diagrams, offsets, pole computations, understanding stability/instability, root-loci, bode, nyquist, margins and an introduction to lead and lag compensation. The focus is on analysis not design which is covered in a later course. The resources here include the lecture hand outs which include embedded tutorial questions, some powerpoints for structuring lectures, some games/quizzes for lectures, a MATLAB laboratory based on significant prior practice, a FLASH lecture and then a formal laboratory test under exam conditions and a small data base of CAA developed on webct (here provided in a zip file). These were developed at the University of Shef

Using MATLAB for engineers

Description

Introductory course on learning and using MATLAB aimed at 1st year engineering undergraduate. These were developed at the University of Sheffield and authored by J A Rossiter from The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. The files include a slightly animated power point slide (runs via web) which includes audio. Hence a little like a lecture. The source m-files mentioned are also supplied in the zip files mentioned. These m-files cover a group of topics. Read the instruction file to learn how to make 'lectures' available to students. More information for control with MATLAB is stored under the control contribution by same author and on the website http://controleducation.group.shef.ac.uk/acs211/notes_webct_quizzes_acs211.htm

The glamour of the ship launch

Description

The sponsor prepares to launch the 'Montcalm' at the shipyard of William Doxford & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 15 March 1960 (TWAM ref. DT .TUR/2/23847FF). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Engaging web pages

Description

This interactive learning object explores various techniques and tools that can be used to create engaging web pages. It briefly traces the history of web design and developments such as the use of animated gifs, roll-overs, image maps, hot-spots and image slicing. It examines how Macromedia Flash works to create animations and display video, with a comparison of vector and bitmap images, and discusses the use of ActionScript to create interactivity. Brief mention is also made of the use of Flash in games, and Flash plugins. An accompanying assessment item tests and consolidates what students have learned, and a number of additional tools enhance students' experience of the resource. These include a notepad, colour changer, calculator and magnifying glass.
