Description
See all metadataLearning and study styles - group work
Description
This document outlines a sample session for groups of year 1 undergraduates. The session asks students to think about how they learn and identifies their learning style. It also asks the group to analyse how well it has been working. It is therefore a useful session early on in a PBL curriculum, or a curriculum which uses extensive group learning. A useful addition to the session is a short video clip of current students talking about their own experiences, and also some sample MCQ questions for students to view. These resources are institutional specific and therefore have not been uploaded, however the author is happy to share details.Subjects

Description
When teaching larger classes, an online environment can provide many opportunities for increased student engagement, group work and self testing. In this case study Professor Alan Crosky, from the University of New South Wales, explains how he uses a blended learning approach in his Engineering Materials and Chemistry course with 700 first year students. He highlights the importance of providing student orientation and support when first introducing an online component, and discusses the benefits of integrating online tutorials and resources, group work, peer assessment and self-testing into the course.Subjects

Description
Life on Earth is a core module for first year students (SQF7) at Edinburgh Napier University (ENU). It is taught for 9 different biological sciences degrees and introduces students to evolution, genetics and ecology. Over 65% of ENU students are first generation and many are international (English as a second language), mature or without standard qualifications. Achieving active engagement of students and a deep learning environment that is both challenging and supportive is difficult, and especially so with such diverse, large groups in a crowded first year timetable. The topic of evolution can make it even more so. The lecturer in this case study has made it look easy - and fun. Techniques used in Life on Earth have been developed over 12 years, informed by action research, evaluation anLicense

The activity was a 2 hour Confident Futures workshop titled ‘Knowing Yourself and Others – Effective Group Working’ for 1st year Sports and Exercise students. The workshop was fully integrated into the ‘Exercise Training for Sports Performance’ module at a point where students have to work together in small groups of 4 or 5 on a project to design and then present an exercise training plan, and reflect on their own and others' performance within the working group. Students are taught a behavioural model (DiSC) which offers insights into individuals differing behavioural styles when working with others, and the potential impact this may have on the effectiveness of group work. After exposure to the model and some self reflection on personal behaviour preferences and their implicatLicense

Description
The Scottish Resource Centre for Women in SET (SRC), based within FECCI, has carried out a series of highly successful equality and diversity training workshops within colleges and universities across Scotland. The training is specifically for students and apprentices studying construction or built environment subjects and is designed to increase their awareness of an increasingly diverse workplace. The need for this type of training is evident in the fact that women (and other minority groups such as black and minority ethnic communities) are significantly under-represented within built environment careers, making up only about 1% of the workforce at trade level. These training workshops were developed in conjunction with ConstructionSkills Scotland and consist of a three hour interactiveLicense

A day long workshop on Day 2 of Week 1 designed to introduce the students to Merchiston Campus, learn about the University and get to know each other. The challenge is to create a series of videos forming an episodic story based around three fictitious freshers. The students form themselves into groups of 4 to create an individual episode(s) of the serial and are provided with a brief. In the brief each of the characters in the serial is described in a manner that is neither gender nor ethnic specific but does describe individual items of clothing and individual personality characteristics as well as catchphrases making them easy to identify as they are played by different actors in each episode.
