Name: Nora Jane McCartney alias Marcella Turnbull alias Bulman Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 4 April 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-37-Nora Jane McCartney AKA Turnbul AKA Bulman The Shields Daily Gazette for 5 April 1905 reports: "NORTH SHIELDS WOMAN SENT TO GAOL Nora Jane McCarthy (39), no fixed abode, was charged at North Shields with stealing three pairs of combinations, value 14s, on the 14th ult, and further with stealing 2s 2d the money of Mary Watson, laundry woman, Church Street, on the same date. Mrs Watson said the garments were part of a washing. Accused had assisted in the washing and went to the owner to deliver them. She received 2s 2d in payment and when the clothes were examined the combinations were missed. She also kept the money. Other evidence having been given, Inspector Proud proved the arrest. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was committed to prison for six weeks on each charge, one sentence to follow the other". Name: Thomas Appleton Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 9 February 1903 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-13-Thomas Appleton The Shields Daily Gazette for 9 February 1903 reports: "Thomas Appleton, draper's assistant, was charged at North Shields today with stealing two shirts valued 4s, the property of W.H. Mitchell, from a shop in Saville Street. John Gordon, a boy employed at the prosecutor's shop, deposed to seeing defendant take the shirts produced. Mary Clark another assistant also gave evidence. Sergt. Anderson stated that he arrested the defendant in a lodging house. When charged he replied 'I was drunk at the time and didn't know what I was doing'. The bench imposed a fine of 10s, including costs". Name: George Wilson Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 16 December 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-63-George Wilson The Shields Daily Gazette for 16 December 1904 reports: "At North Shields Geogre Wilson (17), a minor, was charged with stealing between the 13th and 15th inst. the sum of 3s, the moneys of his father Wm Wilson. Prosecutor said he resided at 15 Hudson St and the 13th inst. he placed three half-crowns and a shilling between the mattresses of the bed. On the following day he missed 1 s and yesterday he missed half a crown. He gave information to the police. Insp Thornton spoke to apprehending the prisoner in Geo. Street. Previous to this he saw him in Hudson Street and on seeing him (witness) approach the house he ran away. When charged with the theft he made no reply. On being searched 2s was found in his possession. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. The father, recalled, said there was nobody but his son in the house during those three days. Name: William Cunningham Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 23rd March 1903 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-15-Wm Cunningham The Shields Daily Gazette for 23 March 1903 reports: William Cunnigham (49) was charged at North Shields this morning with stealing a piece of beef , valued 1s 4d, from a shop in Stephenson Street, the property of Joseph G. Grant. Prosecutor stated that on Saturday night defendant went to his shop and asked to be served with a piece of meat. Witness weighed him a joint but defendant said it was too much and went out. After he had left the shop witness missed a piece of meat from the window. He went after the defendant who on seeing him threw the beef up a back street. PC Colpitts deposed to arresting defendant, who, when charged offered to pay for the meat. The bench imposed a fine of 10s without costs." George Burn, arrested for stealing brushes and a box

Name: George Burn Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 10 November 1902 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-9-George Burn The Shields Daily News for 10 November 1902 reveals that: "At North Shields to-day, two young boys named David Lloyd (15) and George Burn (14) were charged with stealing on the 8th inst. from a wash-house in Prudhoe Street brushes and a box worth 3s, the property of Peter Johnson. Chief Constable Huish stated that he desired the lads to be remanded for eight days. Lloyd came fromn Hull. The remand was granted". The Shields Daily News for 17 November 1902 reveals that the boys pleaded guilty and their parents were bound over in the sum of 5 for their good behaviour during the following 6 months. William Lavery

Description

Name: William Lavery Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 December 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-61-William Lavery The Shields Daily Gazette for 15 December 1904 reports that: "At North Shields Wm Lavery (22), labourer Low Lights, was charged with stealing a quantity of haddock value 4s 6d, the property of Wm Purdy from a stand on the Fish Quay on the 14th inst. A boy employed on one of the fishing boats deposed that he saw the defendant hoist a basket of haddocks from the steam trawler Wild Rose and carry it away. PC Spindler said he arrested the accused behind Clifford's Fort and he found the stolen haddocks in a gutting shed. The accused who pleaded guilty and said he gave himself up to police was fined 10s and costs". William Lavery also appeared before the magistrates in the following year. The Shields Daily News for 1 September 1905 reported: "John Anderson, Edward Tabener, Ernest Schultz, William Lavery, William Stott and William Small were summoned for playing at pitch and toss at the Low Lights and were each fined 5s and costs, with the exception of Anderson, who, having only made his 2nd appearance was fined 2s 6d and costs. William Lavery, Ernest Schultz, Edward Tabener, John James Hall, William Brown, Frederick Mudd, Frederick Scrafton, Samuel Noble and Andrew Thewlis were summoned for a like offence, all being fined 5s and costs, with the exception of Scrafton and Noble who were discharged". He also appears to have gone AWOL during the First World War. The Shields Daily Gazette for 11 December 1914 reports: "When Wm. Lavery (35), soldier, Low Lights, was charged at North Shields today with being an absentee from the 14th Northumberland Fusiliers stationed at Aylesbury on Dec. 7th. Detective Mason said the defendant had travelled from Aylesbury under the seat of a railway carriage to North Shields. He had no permission to have leave. Defendant was remanded until tomorrow to await an escort". The Bench imposed a fine of 10s and costs upon each of them".
