Description

This course presents a tutorial on the ToBI (Tones and Break Indices) system, for labelling certain aspects of prosody in Mainstream American English (MAE-ToBI). The course is appropriate for undergrad or grad students with background in linguistics (phonology or phonetics), cognitive psychology (psycholinguistics), speech acoustics or music, who wish to learn about the prosody of speech, i.e. the intonation, rhythm, grouping and prominence patterns of spoken utterances, prosodic differences that signal meaning and phonetic implementation. Virtual laboratories in Molecular and Cell Biology - Immuno-electron-microscopy

Description

A virtual laboratory that includes immuno-gold labelling and transmission electron micrography (immuno-EM). It allows the student to study intracellular-traffic pathways of two cell-surface receptor molecules, following stimulation of the cells with their specific ligand, for different time periods. The programme first introduces the theory underlying the techniques and includes a video of EM work in a real laboratory. The student is then taken through a series of questions which requires them to devise experiments in the virtual laboratory and interpret their electron-micrographs. Immunogold-co-labelling of the receptors and markers of intracellular compartments (Rabs) allows them to track the intracellular movement of the receptors. During this lesson, we will identify and analyse personal, social and cultural factors that influence learning. As part of this, we will develop an understanding of the terms prejudice, stereotyping and labelling. Secondly, we will identify primary and secondary dimensions of diversity, including a review of the terms, prejudice, stereotyping and labelling.
