Description

This Flash-based resource, aimed at students of lighting design, introduces the idea and use of the lighting cue sheet when operating a manual lighting board. Lighting a stage

Description

This is an interactive Flash-based resource, aimed at lighting designers, which illustrates the standard way of describing the stage. Its aim is to assist lighting designers when planning lighting. Description

This Flash-based resource introduces lighting cue sheets, written notes used to detail changes in lighting during a performance. The resource provides examples, together with explanatory text, of a simple cue sheet and a full list of cues. The former describes the lighting state for just one cue, whereas the latter lists details of all the cues in a performance. Description

Description

Description

This interactive resource introduces students to the idea of the lighting plan, a drawing made by the lighting designer of the stage performance space. This drawing is used to record information about the positioning of lighting and types of lanterns used. This resource gives an example of a lighting plan and focuses on some of main points of information usually noted, such as: how symbols are used to depict lanterns and their positioning; how to indicate the direction a lantern should face; and how names and numbers are often used to indicate different colour or gobo information.

Description

This interactive resource allows students to experiment with the different effects generated when light is shone on an object from different angles. Students can create combinations of main, back, fill and reflector lighting and then see how a photograph would appear using these combinations

Coloured lighting effects

Description

This interactive learning object is aimed at students wishing to study the dynamics of how lighting effects can transform the way we look at a scene. Particular attention is paid to exploring how light can create theatrical effects, or to depict the time of day or year. The use of lighting gels is the main focus and students can use the resource to experiment with the effects of different combinations of gels. Health and safety issues are also considered. An accompanying assessment tests and consolidates what students have learned, and a number of additional tools are available to enhance their experience of the resource. These include a magnifying glass, notepad, calculator and colour changer.

Description

Offered annually in the spring term, Introduction to Stagecraft is a hands-on course that gets students working with the tools and techniques of theatrical production in a practical way. It is not a design course but one devoted to artisanship. Among the many remarkable final projects that have been proposed and presented at the end of the course have been a Renaissance hourglass blown in the MIT glass shop and set into a frame turned on our set shop lathe; a four harness loom built by a student who then wove cloth on it; a number of chain mail tunics and coifs; a wide variety of costume and furniture pieces and electrified period lighting fixtures. The course focuses on the use and optimization of daylight in buildings and on its complementarity to artificial (electric) lighting, to aim at reducing the building's environmental impact while improving the visual comfort of the inhabitants. Fundamentals of daylighting and artificial lighting will first be introduced. More advanced and design-oriented topics will then be presented and practiced through the design project.
