Description

This class provides the tools necessary for an efficient integration of daylighting issues in the overall design of a building. The fundamentals of daylighting and electric lighting are introduced and their relevance to design decisions emphasized: benefits and availability of daylight, solar radiation and sun course, photometry, vision and color perception, daylighting metrics, visual and thermal comfort, electric lighting. More advanced topics are presented and practiced through the design project and homework assignments, such as primary and advanced lighting design strategies, and design and assessment tools for lighting management. This interactive resource introduces students to the idea of the lighting plan, a drawing made by the lighting designer of the stage performance space. This drawing is used to record information about the positioning of lighting and types of lanterns used. This resource gives an example of a lighting plan and focuses on some of main points of information usually noted, such as: how symbols are used to depict lanterns and their positioning; how to indicate the direction a lantern should face; and how names and numbers are often used to indicate different colour or gobo information.

This interactive learning object looks at some of the planning, personnel and equipment involved in stage lighting production. Using text and animated diagrams, the resource provides an overview of the following areas: the role of the lighting designer; understanding lighting requirements from a designer's plan; identifying and naming the different sections of the stage as used by lighting designers; and recognising different theatre lanterns and their lighting effects. Description

This interactive resource demonstrates the lighting effects generated from using barndoors on theatre lanterns. Barndoors can be fixed onto theatre lanterns to alter the shape of a light beam and how it is directed onto the stage. This resource allows students to click on two different barndoor positions in order to see the corresponding lighting effects on a stage set.

This Flash-based resource introduces lighting cue sheets, written notes used to detail changes in lighting during a performance. The resource provides examples, together with explanatory text, of a simple cue sheet and a full list of cues. The former describes the lighting state for just one cue, whereas the latter lists details of all the cues in a performance. Students are required to click on subheadings within the resource to reveal relevant information.

Description

This learning object, aimed at students of photography and lighting design (for the theatre, for example), examines the use and benefits of reflectors and gels to create different lighting effects. The effects of gold reflectors and reflector fill light are demonstrated by means of images. Students are then given the opportunity to recreate the different light effects produced by combinations of gels, fitted over lanterns. Fitting and replacing a gel is also demonstrated. An accompanying assessment item tests and consolidates what students have learned. A number of additional built-in tools are also available to enhance students' experience of the resource. These include a magnifying glass, a notepad, a calculator and a colour changer.

This class provides the tools necessary for an efficient integration of daylighting issues in the overall design of a building. The fundamentals of daylighting and electric lighting are introduced and their relevance to design decisions emphasized: benefits and availability of daylight, solar radiation and sun course, photometry, vision and color perception, daylighting metrics, visual and thermal comfort, electric lighting. More advanced topics are presented and practiced through the design project and homework assignments, such as primary and advanced lighting design strategies, and design and assessment tools for lighting management.

This class explores the artistry of Lighting Design. Students gain an overall technical working knowledge of the tools of the trade, and learn how, and where to apply them to a final design. However essential technical expertise is, the class stresses the artistic, conceptual, collaborative side of the craft. The class format is a "hands on" approach, with a good portion of class time spent in a theatre.
