Description
This seminar will focus on three sports: swimming, cycling and running. There will be two components to the seminar: classroom sessions and a "laboratory" in the form of a structured training program. The classroom component will introduce the students to the chemistry of their own biological system. With swimming, running and cycling as sample sports, students are encouraged to apply their knowledge to complete a triathlon shortly after the term. This topic begins with a good introduction to the different types of joints (fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial) and each is described in more detail. A table gives a comparison between joint types and modern everyday items for the students to relate to (e.g. a hinge and the elbow joint). The next part of this topic describes the muscular system and gives a brief introduction to the axial and appendicular muscular system. The three types of muscle tissue are also described.Subjects

This topic starts with a description of the main functions of bone (e.g. surface for attachment). Bone composition and endochondral ossification is described and a diagram showing the stages is given. The different types of bones (e.g. short, flat) and the structure of long bones are detailed further. Diagrams showing the different regions of the spine are included. Bone modelling and remodelling are described.Subjects

Description
This Flash simulation from the Royal Veterinary College is designed to help pre-clinical students to understand the function of ocular nerves and muscles. The student is presented with a virtual patient to test pupillary (consensual) light reflex, palpebral and corneal reflexes as well as testing the nervous control of extra-ocular muscles of the eye. This provides a safe way to observe and practice on a wide range of nerve or ocular deficits and also receive informative feedback.Subjects

Description
In this new seminar, we will be focusing on three sports, swimming, cycling and running. There will be two components to the seminar, a classroom and a laboratory. The classroom component will introduce the students to the chemistry of their own biological system. Since we are looking at swimming, running and cycling as our sample sports, we will apply the classroom knowledge to complete a triathlon.Recommended CitationFor any use or distribution of these materials, please cite as follows:Patti Christie, course materials for SP.235 Chemistry of Sports, Spring 2007.
