10.569 Synthesis of Polymers (MIT) 10.569 Synthesis of Polymers (MIT)

Description

Studies synthesis of polymeric materials, emphasizing interrelationships of chemical pathways, process conditions, and microarchitecture of molecules produced. Chemical pathways include traditional approaches such as anionic polymerization, radical condensation, and ring-opening polymerizations. Other techniques are discussed, including stable free radical polymerizations and atom transfer free radical polymerizations (ARTP), catalytic approaches to well-defined architectures, and polymer functionalization in bulk and at surfaces. Process conditions include bulk, solution, emulsion, suspension, gas phase, and batch vs. continuous fluidized bed. Microarchitecture includes tacticity, molecular-weight distribution, sequence distributions in copolymers, errors in chains such as branches, head- Studies synthesis of polymeric materials, emphasizing interrelationships of chemical pathways, process conditions, and microarchitecture of molecules produced. TALAT Lecture 2403: Applied Fracture Mechanics

Description

This lecture demonstrates how to teach the principles and concepts of fracture mechanics as well as provide recommendations for practical applications; it provides necessary information for fatigue life estimations on the basis of fracture mechanics as a complementary method to the S-N concept. Background in engineering, materials and fatigue is required.

A comparative analysis of Australian, US, and British telecasts of the Seoul Olympic opening ceremony

Description

This study compares audio and visual components of the 1988 Seoul Olympics opening ceremony telecasts as seen in the United States (NBC), the United Kingdom (BBC), and Australia (TEN). The authors describe and compare the media constructions of this global event that result from differences in commercial obligation, financial resources, and the geopolitical and cultural perspectives of the broadcasting networks. The study explores, in particular, the balance and tension between televised images of nations and the symbols of Olympic internationalism, suggesting a range of policy implications.

View of a band playing at the Majestic Ballroom, South Shields, September 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/27286). Haven Point is located on the site of the old Ballroom. This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/. Interior of the Shipley Art Gallery

Description

The Shipley Art Gallery was bequeathed to the people of Gateshead following the death of Joseph Shipley, a local solicitor, in 1909. The architect?s plans for the Gallery were submitted to Gateshead for approval in October 1914. With hindsight, it is hard for us to imagine that towns were planning major projects like this during the First World War. However in autumn 1914, the British people were convinced it would be ?all over by Christmas?. Despite this belief coming to nothing, Gateshead continued to build the Gallery, even travelling down to the House of Lords to appeal against a ban on providing new materials except to the War Effort. The building opened in 1917 and is a testament to local pride and craftsmanship. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Usworth Brickworks

Description

View of Usworth Brickworks, May 1965 (TWAM ref. 5417/406/1). 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved. Rough turning the shell body

Description

Rough turning the shell body at the National Projectile Factory, Birtley 14 June 1916 (TWAM ref. 1027/271). These images belong to an album of photographs taken in the National Projectile Factory, Birtley (near Gateshead) during the First World War. The photographs were taken by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, who built the factory. The images date from June 1916, shortly after the factory became operational. What makes the factory (and these photographs of it) so special is that all the management and workers there were Belgian. The factory and the nearby village of Elisabethville (built to accommodate them) were like a little corner of Belgium transplanted to the North East of England. More information about the factory and the village of Elisabethville can be found in the blog, which accompanies this set.
