Historical Methodology: The Art and Craft of the Historian

Description

Historical Methodology will introduce the student to historical research methods and familiarize the student with the tools and techniques that historians use to study the past. The student will learn about the process of modern historical inquiry and gain a better understanding of the diverse resources that historians use to conduct research. The first four units will focus on research methodology and examine how and why historians conduct research on the past. Later units will examine how different historical resources can be used for historical research. By the end of the course, the student will understand how to conduct research on past events and be familiar with the variety of physical and electronic resources available for historical research. Observing the 1980s

Description

Observing the 1980s brings together archive material from the Mass Observation Project for the period 1981-1990, interviews from the British Library Oral History Collections and a range of contemporary documents from the University of Sussex Library Documents collection. These materials have been used to create an Open Educational Resources 'Thatcher's Britain: Observing the 1980s' at the University of Sussex which is freely available via the website for anyone to use, under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 licence.

Observing the 1980s

Description

Observing the 1980s brings together archive material from the Mass Observation Project for the period 1981-1990, interviews from the British Library Oral History Collections and a range of contemporary documents from the University of Sussex Library Documents collection. These materials have been used to create an Open Educational Resource, consisting of an undergraduate teaching module, 'Thatcher's Britain: Observing the 1980s', which can be downloaded and used on Moodle, or accessed via a guest login. The resources are hosted at the University of Sussex and are freely available via the website for anyone to use, under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 licence.

Learning about Spanish Society and History through Oral History: The OpenLIVES Collection

This is a powerpoint presentation with external links, academic references and drawings. It is used in a class with Year 1 students in the module SPPO 1180 "Skills and Issues in Spanish Portuguese and Latin American Studies" at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures of the University of Leeds. It is in Spanish. It introduces students to the OpenLIVES collection as an OER project on Oral History and Education which adds an alternative methodology for the recovery, understanding and socialisation of history in Spain during the Civil War and the Franco Regime, with a focus on migration.

Ethical Research in OpenLIVES

Description

This a collection of documents that includes application forms and communications with the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Leeds, who had to approve the research that was conducted by students in the module "Discovering Spanish Voices Abroad in a Digital World", as well as consent forms, information sheet and adverts used with research participants and a risk assessment form. All the work was revised and edited by the tutor. In 2016, this OpenLIVES module was transformed into a Final Year Project 40-credit module for a wide range of languages, topics and research approaches at the University of Leeds.
