Looking down Grey Street, Newcastle, 1958

Description

View along Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, looking down toward the Theatre Royal, April 1958 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/976/8). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. HMS Pigeon, HMS Plover and HMS Sarpedon

Description

HMS Pigeon, HMS Plover and HMS Sarpedon on the stocks at the Hawthorn Leslie shipyard, Hebburn, 5 November 1915 (TWAM ref. 4471/3). The shipyard of R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn built many fine warships. During the First World War the firm built 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyer leaders and 25 torpedo boat destroyers. The firm also built machinery and boilers for 2 battleships, and a further 3 light cruisers. These and other warships built by Hawthorn Leslie before the War, are remembered in this set. There are remarkable images of warships under construction at Hebburn, as well as fascinating shots of the people who attended the launches. The set also contains majestic views of the ships at sea. The images are not only a testimony to the skill of those who designed and built these ships but also to the courage of those who sailed in them. Services on the A1 in 1965

Description

View of petrol station on the A1 at Washington, 1965 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/36378C). The modern Washington Services look rather different. This site was to become Crowther Industrial Estate. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved. (Copyright) These images are Crown Copyright. We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Please cite 'Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' when reusing. General view of Fatfield

Description

General view of Fatfield, May 1965 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/36063XX).
