This course will serve as both an introduction to contemporary political philosophy and a way to explore issues of pluralism and multiculturalism. Racial and ethnic groups, national minorities, aboriginals, women, sexual minorities, and other groups have organized to highlight injustice and demand recognition and accommodation on the basis of their differences. In practice, democratic states have granted a variety of group-differentiated rights, such as exemptions from generally applicable laws, special representation rights, language rights, or limited self-government rights, to different types of groups. This course will examine how different theories of citizenship address the challenges raised by different forms of pluralism. The course material emphasizes mathematical models for predicting distribution and fate of effluents discharged into lakes, reservoirs, rivers, estuaries, and oceans. It also focuses on formulation and structure of models as well as analytical and simple numerical solution techniques. Also discussed are the role of element cycles, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, as water quality indicators; offshore outfalls and diffusion; salinity intrusion in estuaries; and thermal stratification, eutrophication, and sedimentation processes in lakes and reservoirs. This course is a core requirement for the Environmental MEng program. This seminar explores changes in the international economy and their effects on domestic politics, economy, and society. Is globalization really a new phenomenon? Is it irreversible? What are effects on wages and inequality, on social safety nets, on production, and innovation? How does it affect relations between developed countries and developing countries? How globalization affects democracy? These are some of the key issues that will be examined. Quality in Higher Education

Description

These materials have been used in the second module of a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. In the first module, participants had considered ways in which they could develop and improve their teaching by obtaining feedback from their students and through observing and being observed by peers. The resources here move the focus to a programme, department or institutional level. The first is an exploratory activity that considers different perspectives on the ‘Quality’ of HE teaching and learning. The second looks at institutional approaches to peer observation of teaching and, particularly, at changes that might be needed in order to accommodate an increase in technology-enhanced learning and new interdisciplinary courses.

Description

In this course, we study elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with variable coefficients building up to the minimal surface equation. Then we study Fourier and harmonic analysis, emphasizing applications of Fourier analysis. We will see some applications in combinatorics / number theory, like the Gauss circle problem, but mostly focus on applications in PDE, like the Calderon-Zygmund inequality for the Laplacian, and the Strichartz inequality for the Schrodinger equation. In the last part of the course, we study solutions to the linear and the non-linear Schrodinger equation. The injustices of high- versus low-skilled temporary labour migration programs: With evidence from Canada

Description

Among critics of temporary labour migration programs (TLMP), it is common to describe them as exploitative, rights-violating, and unfair. Often, however, these critics fail to distinguish between high- and low-skilled TLMP, the stipulations of which are often quite distinct. Where they do distinguish between them, the common conclusion is that only low-skilled TLMP pose problems of justice which require immediate action. Patti Lenard will examine these assumptions. She argues that both low- and high-skilled TLMP often pose problems of justice, and that while some of these apply only to high- or low-skilled programs, there are others which apply to both.
