Introduction to drama Introduction to drama

Description

This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught in Autumn Semester 2010. This module is designed to provide an introduction to the analysis and performance of drama. It has three main aims: 1) To provide an introduction to the analysis of drama; 2) To give a taste of the wide range of performance convention in history, from Ancient Greek tragedy to nineteenth-century naturalism; 3) To foreground drama as a performance medium rather than a form of literature. At Nottingham, we approach drama as a performance medium: an event within a specific time, space and locale, in which real people and objects are presented to other people in real, shared space. Saami Tent in Second Life

Description

Forming part of an archaeological theory module in the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester, student avatars were required to engage with Second Life artefacts such as the Sami tent through a series of SL-tivities. Originally, this part of the module – focusing on gender roles within the Sami community – had been taught using the 2D representational model contained on the handout, which was emailed to students. The Sami tent in SL offered the alternative of a rich, immersive 3D experience, allowing archaeology students the opportunity to engage fully with the artefacts within the Sami tent and, through the switching of land permissions, the nature of gender roles within the Sami culture.

Teaching using scenario based simulations in Second Life - Case study

Description

This case study examines how the University of Leicester utilised a virtual oil rig in the online world Second Life, to help students develop an emergency evacuation strategy for an oil rig. This was conducted as part of the DUCKLING research project, involving students in an online masters degree in occupational psychology. The unique learning opportunities offered by virtual worlds are discussed, along with common technical difficulties that can potentially inhibit student learning.
