This is a photograph of a Child playing in a Park in Washington, UK. The Photograph was taken at some point in the 1970's. Reference: 5417/470/1 This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013. The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington. However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community. These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs. From 'Street Life in London', 1877, by John Thomson and Adolphe Smith: ?The independent boot-black whose photograph is before the reader, found by experience that the system instituted was not altogether pleasant. He has served in two brigades, the "blues" and the "reds," and found them both equally objectionable; so, at last, he gave up the uniform and became an independent boot-black. In this capacity, though free, he experienced all the persecutions to which I have alluded, and as he grew older and more tired of this life, he finally resolved to leave the narrow streets for the broader thoroughfares of the ocean. As a sailor, he promises to become a useful help to his captain and ship. His mother has to nurse an invalid husband, and must also provide for a large family. Under these circumstances, it was not always easy for her to spare the services of her son. But when he became an independent boot-black, he could go out at his own hours, and thus was of greater use to his mother in her trouble; and it was a great help to the family to know that whenever the boy had a few moments to spare, he might run out and hope to gain some pence by cleaning gentlemen's boots.? Description
Name: Angelo Reciti Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 18 April 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-69-Angelo Reciti The Shields Daily News for 19 April 1905 reports: "ALLEGE USE OF THREATS AT NORTH SHIELDS. HUSBAND AND WIFE CASE. At North Shields Police Court today, Angelo Reciti (29), residing at 8 Clive Street, was charged on a warrant with unlawfully using threats towards his wife Elizabeth, whereby she fears he will do her some grievous bodily harm, on the 18th inst. Sergt. Geo. Murray spoke to apprehending the accused about a quarter past eleven o'clock last night. In pursuance of a warrant, he proceeded to 64 Elsdon Street and there found the accused concealed under a bed. He got him out and he thereupon became very violent. Witness had to get the assistance of two other police officers to hold him. The wife of the the prisoner had been obliged to leave the town in consequence of his threats towards her. At present she was staying in Jarrow. The accused was remanded until tomorrow to give his wife an opportunity of attending the court". This wasn't the first time that the Magistrates had become involved in Angelo and Elizabeth Reciti's marital disputes. The Shields Daily Gazette for 26 October 1904 reported: "At North Shields to-day Angelo Reciti, Italian shoemaker, was charged with deserting his wife Elizabeth. Mr G.W. Chapman defended. Complainant, who is only 16, said they had been married since March and resided at Camden Terrace. On Saturday last, at defendant's request, she went to visit her mother at Jarrow, and on returning in the evening she found nothing but the four walls. The defendant had removed all her furniture and her clothing. She was a present living at 57 Church Way. By Mr Chapman: She admitted having declined to live with her husband if he removed into Clive Street. Defendant said that five or six weeks ago he went to Manchester in search of employment and when he returned he discovered that his wife had sold off the furniture and gone to live with her mother. He wished to go into Clive Street for convenience in his business, and when he spoke to his wife about removing she declined to go with him. The magistrates granted a judicial separation, the defendant to pay his wife 5s a week. Defendant was also charged with threatening the life of his wife's sister and was bound over to keep the peace for six months". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Children performing in a school play at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1982 (TWAM ref. E.NC18/24). Possibly a Nativity performance (is that a donkey I can see in the background?). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. Description
When the First World War began Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery had been established for 68 years. The Director in 1914 was the formidable J. A. Charlton Deas who is remembered principally for his pioneering work, started in 1913, with the blind, giving them hands on access to the collection so that they could see with their fingers. Deas was also a pioneer in touring exhibitions and in contemporary recording. In November 1914 he was requested to also take on the role of Supervising Librarian at West Hartlepool, after the librarian there had joined up. One month later West Hartlepool was bombarded by the German Imperial Navy. Although he tried collecting objects from the bombardment ?there was great demand for them? and he could not secure any but he was successful in acquiring nearly 100 photographs showing the aftermath, which he used in an exhibition shown in both West Hartlepool and Sunderland. In July 1919 Deas was responsible for organising Sunderland?s impressive Peace Parade. It included elaborate floats representing the countries of our allies as well as contingents of the armed forces and civilian organisations that took part. Sponsor preparing to launch the tanker ?Empire Coral? built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 11 February 1941 (TWAM ref. DS.LG/4/PH/3/2). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Reference: DS.JLT-5-3-5 This image has been taken from the Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd shipbuilders? collection. The photographs, taken at the Sunderland Based Shipyard were used in the publicity campaign 'The Art of Shipbuilding' published in 1946 to promote the firms of Joseph L. Thompson & Sons Ltd and Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd. Inspired by the upcoming Grayson Perry exhibition 'The Vanity in small differences' Tyne & Wear Archives have created this set in reaction to some of the themes surrounding Sunderland and its social make up that have been explored by Grayson Perry in his six large scale tapestries. This set features both Social and Landscape Photography of a nostalgic Sunderland; these consist of both Aerial views of the physical make up of Sunderland's landscape, mixed with social portraits of the working community and industrial scenes traditionally associated with Sunderland's Heritage. Both are relevant to Grayson Perry's upcoming collection of Tapestries exploring the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. When recently interviewed on the subject Perry states "When I asked club singer Sean Foster-Conley what I should feature in my tapestries to show working-class taste, he said ?the mines and shipyards?. ?But they no longer exist,? I replied. In a very important way, however, he was right. The heavy industries that shaped the north of England also shaped the emotional lives of the generations of people who lived there. Winding towers and cranes can be torn down in a day, but the bonds, formed through shared hardship working under them, live on." These images of a community driven by industry, mixed with Aerial Views of the physical make up of Sunderland during this time reflect on Perry's view of the eternal relevance that Sunderland's social and industrial past has on its present community.
