Ernest Frost

Description

Name: Ernest Frost Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 27 August 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-75-Ernest Frost The Shields Daily News for 29 August reports 1905 reports: ?SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST A SHIP?S STEWARD AT NORTH SHIELDS. STEALING AND SMUGGLING GOODS.. At North Shields Police Court today Ernest Frost (39), a steward, belonging to Germany, was charged with landing from the screw steamer Astrakhan 7lbs of coffee and 10lbs of tea, while in the Albert Edward Dock on the 28th inst., with intent to avoid payment of duty on the same. He was further charged with having assaulted Wm. Joseph Smith and Joseph Phealen, customs officers. Mr Hogg prosecuted on behalf of the Customs. Wm. Joseph Smith, preventive officer for the customs, said that on the night in question he was on patrol duty at the Albert Edward Dock when he observed two men with a cart, accompanied by the defendant. Witness went up to the defendant and asked him if he had anything liable to duty on the cart. He replied in the negative and he then asked him to open the bags. There was nothing in the first bag, but in the second he found 10lbs of tea and 7lbs of coffee. He asked him if duty had been paid on these and he replied that there had not and that they were part of the ship?s stores. He then requested the defendant to take them back to the ship, and they were on their way back, when the defendant jumped off the cart and struck witness twice in the face, knocking him to the ground. While there he kicked witness on the thigh. Another officer came to his assistance and he was assaulted. The defendant was not drunk. John Phealan, Customs officer, spoke to going to the last witness?s assistance, when the defendant struck witness on the forehead and kicked him on the shins. The accused said he was drunk and did not know what he was doing. On the first charge he was ordered to pay single value and duty, 1 2s, and costs and fined 20s and costs or one month for each assault. A further charge of stealing several article of food, value 3 4s 6d from the ss Astrakhan was also preferred against the accused. Supt. Jamieson, RTP, prosecuted. John Biddick, master of the Astrakhan, identified the articles produced as the property of his owners. He said the accused was engaged as steward on board the vessel and had charge of these articles. He was discharged on the 28th inst. on account of drunkenness during the voyage. Mr Smith said that in another bag in the accused?s possession, he found several articles of food, which were concealed amongst his clothing. Sub-Inspector Leech said that when charged the defendant made no reply. Accused no stated that he was drunk and in such a nervous condition that he did not know what he was doing. He was committed to prison for two months". 'Thorshavn' afloat after launch

Description

View of the tanker ?Thorshavn? afloat on the River Wear after launch by J.L. Thompson & Sons, 21 November 1949 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/4/PH/1/661/3/3). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Henry Wilson alias Charles Murray

Description

Name: Henry Wilson alias Charles Murray Arrested for: False Pretences Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 24th April 1903 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-17-Henry Wilson AKA Charles Murray The Shields Gazette for 25 April 1903 reports that: "A coloured man named Henry Wilson, or Murray, was charged at North Shields yesterday, with having obtained by means of false pretences food to the value of 6s from Ann Skipsey at Long Row, Percy Main, on November 24th and 25th last. Prosecutrix stated that defendant went to her house and asked if he could have lodgings. He told her his boat, the steamer Jubilee, was in the Albert Edward Dock, and he would be paid off with 68 in a day or two. She supplied him with food up to the value of 6s and he slept in the house for one night. Her son-in-law made inquiries and found that there was no such vessel as the Jubilee in Albert Edward Dock. She spoke to defendant about it and he asked her if he brought some of his shipmates would she believe him. She replied that she would and he went off then and she never saw him afterwards. Corroborative evidence was given and defendant, who had been convicted three times this year for a similar offence, was sent to gaol for two months with hard labour". Launch of the 'Eidanger'

Description

View of the tanker ?Eidanger? afloat on the River Wear after launch, built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, 1 July 1938 (TWAM ref. DS.LG/4/PH/3/1 pg23). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Shipyard workforce at Lake Baikal

Description

The icebreaking steamer 'Baikal' was built at Walker in 1896. This photograph shows the workforce who reassembled the 'Baikal' at Lake Baikal. They were mainly exiles and criminals. They also included Isaac O'Henry, the Chief Engineer, who often told a tale of a long walk in the tundra alone with a guide who later turned out to have murdered his entire family with an axe.
