Description
Name: Patrick Murphy alias Duffy Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 October 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-111-Patrick Murphy AKA Duffy For an image of his accomplice Thomas Ward please see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/23114652176. The Shields Daily News for 5 October 1907 reports: "THEFT OF A SOVEREIGN AT NORTH SHIELDS. BAD CHARACTERS SENT TO GAOL. At the North Shields Police Court today - Thos. Ward (26) and Patrick Murphy (32), were charged with having, on the 4th inst., stolen a sovereign from the person of a seaman named Thomas Garraty, whilst in the Exchange Hotel, Clive Street. The prosecutor stated that he had just returned from sea and was feeling happy. On Friday night he met some men and took them into the Exchange public house for the purpose of treating them. Witness put a sovereign on the counter and called in the drinks but the barman refused to supply them. One of the accused grabbed the sovereign and ran out of the bar. Robert Subden, a shoe black, said he followed the men into the Exchange and saw Murphy pick up the sovereign and run out of the bar. Witness followed the men up Borough Road and on reaching Saville Street they were arrested by PC McGee. Richard Waugh, barman at the Exchange, said that he refused to serve the prosecutor because of his condition. The prosecutor threw a sovereign on the counter and Murphy picked it up and made off. Chief Constable Huish put in a number of previous convictions against the accused. Ward was committed to prison for two months and Murphy for three months with hard labour". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Polishers at work inside a Joiners' shop, probably that of Sir James Laing & Sons, shipbuilders of Sunderland, January 1948 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/4/2/4). Sunderland has a remarkable history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering. From the development of turret ships in the 1890s and the production of Doxford opposed piston engines after the First World War through to the designs for Liberty ships in the 1940s and SD14s in the 1960s. Sunderland has much to be proud of. Tyne & Wear Archives cares for tens of thousands of photographs in its shipbuilding collections. Most of these focus on the ships ? in particular their construction, launch and sea trials. This set looks to redress the balance and to celebrate the work of the men and women who have played such a vital part in the region?s history. The images show the human side of this great story, with many relating to the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm William Doxford & Sons Ltd. The Archives has produced a short blog to accompany these images. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. The neglected wife encourages her husband to sort himself out (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28465E). You can read a blog relating to these images here www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne & Wear Archives is very fortunate to hold the photographic negatives of the firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. The collection contains many remarkable images commissioned by local firms during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Turners collection also includes images taken by the firm to promote their own business and this set shows a short series of images taken in March 1962 to promote the sale of cameras in their shops. They tell the story of a bored husband, his mind numbed by television, and his worried wife. Looking for inspiration, the man passes by a Turners shop window and discovers the wonder of photography. At once his happiness returns and matrimonial harmony is restored. We?ve no record of the captions used by Turners to accompany these images so we?ve used a bit of artistic licence and created our own. Maybe you can suggest alternatives. This portrait of Joseph Swan is from the Swan Collection of Tyne & Wear Museums, held at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was a British Physicist, Chemist and Inventor. Swan lived at Underhill, on Kells Lane North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It was here that he conducted most of his experiments in the large conservatory. His investigations in electro-chemistry led to the construction of a motor electric meter, an electric fire-damp detector, a miners' electric safety lamp. Most importantly, Swan was also a pioneer in photographic procedures such as carbon printing. It was Swan's demonstration of the light bulb at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, before its later development by the American Thomas Edison that he is most famous for. Swan and Edison later collaborated in their work with the incandescent light bulb in 1883, when they founded the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, otherwise known as 'Ediswan.' Many items held at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums relating to Joseph Swan offer an amazing insight in to his work as an inventor and his place in the History of Scientific progression. This set offers a small selection from these collections. This set has been produced in support of the British Science Festival 2013, held in Newcastle upon Tyne. You can find more information on the Festival here (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Description
A master model maker at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd, 1946 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/3/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. People observing the attraction 'Rotor, People like Flies on the Wall'.1950's The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day. Ref: TWAS:944/2514 (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
